My good friend the press officer

I had already realised what a nightmare council press offices could be to deal with before today but had thought they’d be a little more accommodating once I was behind the desk of one of the big names in newspapers. Apparently not.

After beginning my day with the usual hunt for stories I stumbled across an ongoing dispute between a well-known BBC presenter and her local council over planning permission. I quickly realised that the planning committee of the council in question had actually met the night before to make its final decision on the issue and that it had been looking likely that the presenter would be made to pull down a very costly extension on the back of her house. It only being 10 am the decision had obviously not been posted on the council’s website yet (heaven forbid!) and so I hurriedly called the press office to try and access the decision before anyone else.  Continue reading

Beefeaters and vox pops

Today’s turn of events reminded me exactly why I want to be a journalist: I began the day sitting at a computer in an office in Kensington and ended it having a cuppa with two Beefeaters at the Tower of London.

This morning kicked off in the usual way. After arriving at the office I sat down and began to hunt for stories. I was mulling over a few options when the editor came over and asked me to head to the tube station and gather some vox pops. Now, I’m not usually the biggest fan of vox pops* – I don’t think anyone is – but today’s were surprisingly fun: not only was I glad to escape the office and my lonely existence as an intern but the majority of people were actually willing to talk to me (I think my story-hunting despair made me overly aggressive in my people-approaching). What’s more, I was even accompanied by a professional photographer so for once managed to avoid humiliating myself with the usual “Oh, s**t, I’m so sorry, it’s blurry/your head’s cut off/I haven’t actually managed to take it (delete as appropriate)… can we try that again?”

The art of being an intern

It’s the end of day three and I would love to say today’s gone better but unfortunately it was much of the same: educational but difficult.

It is worth saying here (for those of you who have never had the fortune/misfortune to be an intern in the media industry) that every news organisation operates in a completely different way and as such, the way in which an intern fits into the mix is completely different also. Indeed,  there are some organisations – and these tend to be either local newspapers or community-based websites – where the intern is treated as just another member of staff, whereas at others – usually large regional newspapers or the nationals – the intern is very much just that: an intern. A fish out of water

7.51 am and my second day’s already off to a bad start. I’ve overslept.

So much for tomorrow (now today) being “another day.”

After a fair amount of screaming and running around I somehow make it into “work” and into my new temporary role as  ”Producer’s Assistant”. That’s right, yesterday – in between finding a news story and subsequently losing it – I was asked to help out on the set of a video shoot and so I suddenly find myself running around taking coffee orders and escorting people to hair and make-up. Not quite what I had imagined when I signed up to work on the news desk of the country’s most famous regional paper.  Continue reading

Tomorrow’s another day

Over the past six years I’ve carried out around 13 work placements. Some consisted of just one day’s shadowing, others of months spent effectively working as a full-time – yet unpaid – employee. Throughout all these experiences I’ve learnt that with the good days usually come the bad but with the difficult very rarely the easy. But when times get tough it’s important to remember that every single experience takes you another notch up the learning curve and that it’s often from the most difficult experiences that you learn the most.  Continue reading
